Bike Transport Services in Kolkata: Cost, Packing & Delivery Time

Shipping a two-wheeler sounds like the simplest part of a move, right up until you start calling around. One company quotes ₹3,000, another ₹9,000, and neither of them explains the difference. This guide covers what bike transport services in Kolkata actually cost in 2026, what happens to your bike between pickup and delivery, and the handful of things that go wrong when a mover cuts corners. For the full service page with booking, see bike transportation in Kolkata.

What bike transport services in Kolkata cost

Distance is the main driver, and the price bands are reasonably predictable.

DistanceTypical costExample destinations
Up to 400 km₹3,500 – 5,500Siliguri, Durgapur, Bhubaneswar
400 – 800 km₹5,500 – 8,000Patna, Ranchi, Guwahati
800 km+₹8,000 – 11,000Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad

Within Kolkata itself, a local two-wheeler shift is usually ₹1,200 – 2,500 — but honestly, if both addresses are in the city, riding it yourself is cheaper and takes an hour.

Three things move you within a band:

Engine capacity. A 110cc scooter and a 350cc Royal Enfield do not occupy the same space or weigh the same. Anything above 250cc typically sits at the upper end.

Shared load vs dedicated. Most bikes travel on a shared carrier with eight to twelve other vehicles. That is what makes the price reasonable. A dedicated vehicle costs roughly double and is only worth it for a premium or heavily modified bike.

Door-to-door vs godown-to-godown. Picking up from your building and delivering to the new address adds ₹800 – 1,500 over dropping and collecting at the transporter's warehouse. Most people take door-to-door, and for a first-time shipper it is the right call.

What should actually happen to your bike

This is where cheap and proper diverge, and it is worth knowing the steps so you can check them.

Fuel is drained. The tank should be brought down to near-empty — a couple hundred millilitres at most. Carriers are not permitted to transport vehicles with full tanks, and any company willing to skip this is telling you something about the rest of their process.

Battery terminal is disconnected. Prevents drain and accidental shorts over a five-day transit.

The bike is wrapped, not just tied. Bubble wrap over the tank, headlamp, mirrors and indicators, then a stretch-film layer. Mirrors are usually removed and packed separately.

It is loaded on a ramp and strapped at the wheels. Soft straps over the tyres, not chains across the frame. Chains across a fuel tank leave dents that show up three weeks later when you finally wash the bike.

Condition photos are taken at both ends. Timestamped photos of all four sides before it goes on the carrier and immediately on arrival. This is your entire evidence base if there is a scratch dispute, and it takes ninety seconds.

If you are moving a car on the same booking, our comparison of enclosed vs open carrier car transport covers the same trade-offs at the four-wheeler level.

Delivery timelines from Kolkata

These are realistic door-to-door windows, not the optimistic number a salesperson gives you on the phone.

RouteTransit time
Kolkata to Bhubaneswar2 – 3 days
Kolkata to Siliguri2 – 3 days
Kolkata to Ranchi / Patna3 – 4 days
Kolkata to Delhi5 – 7 days
Kolkata to Hyderabad5 – 7 days
Kolkata to Bangalore6 – 8 days
Kolkata to Mumbai6 – 8 days

A shared carrier does not leave until it is full, so add one to three days of waiting at the origin godown during off-peak weeks. Any company promising Kolkata to Bangalore in three days is either quoting you a dedicated vehicle without saying so, or they are guessing.

Paperwork you need

Keep these ready at pickup and keep copies for yourself:

  • Registration certificate (RC) — original or a clear copy
  • Valid insurance — your own policy stays in force during transit, and it matters if there is a claim
  • PUC certificate
  • Your photo ID
  • The consignment note / lorry receipt (LR) issued by the transporter — this is the single most important document. No LR, no proof your bike was ever handed over.

  • If you are moving to a different state permanently, you will eventually need an NOC from the Kolkata RTO and re-registration at the destination. That is separate from transport and takes weeks, so start it early rather than after your bike arrives.

    Common mistakes

Leaving belongings in the storage box. Helmets, documents, tools — these are not covered by transit insurance and routinely go missing. Empty it completely.

Not noting the odometer reading. Note it at pickup. A bike on a carrier should arrive with the same reading it left with. A difference of forty kilometres means somebody rode it.

Paying the full amount in advance. A booking advance of 20 – 30 percent is normal. The balance is due on delivery, after you have inspected the bike. Anyone demanding full payment upfront has removed your only leverage.

Assuming insurance is automatic. Transit insurance is usually an add-on costing 1.5 – 3 percent of declared value. For an ₹80,000 bike that is around ₹1,500 — worth it on a 2,000 km haul, skippable on a 300 km one.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I ship my bike along with my household goods?

Yes, and it is usually the cheaper option. If you are already booking a truck for a house shift, the bike goes in the same vehicle and you pay a nominal addition rather than a separate transport charge. Mention it during the survey so the crew allows for the space.

Is my bike insured during transport?

Your own policy remains active, but it may not cover damage while the vehicle is being carried rather than ridden. Declared-value transit insurance from the mover covers it specifically. Ask for the policy document, not a verbal assurance.

What if my bike arrives with a scratch?

Raise it at delivery, before you sign the receipt and before the carrier leaves. Compare against the pickup photos, note the damage on the delivery copy of the LR, and photograph it. A claim raised two days later is very hard to substantiate.

    Do you transport electric scooters?

Yes, but tell us in advance. EV batteries have transport restrictions, some carriers require a specific state of charge, and the handling differs from a petrol two-wheeler.
