South Kolkata moves are their own category. The housing stock is older, the lanes are narrower, and a surprising number of buildings have a lift that cannot take a double-bed frame. A mover who works mostly in New Town high-rises will underquote a Behala move and then discover why on the day. This guide covers what shifting actually involves in Behala, Garia and Tollygunge — and what it costs.
Why South Kolkata is priced differently
Three structural things, and they compound.
Lane access. Large parts of Behala, Tollygunge and old Garia were built before anyone was planning for a 20-foot container. A Tata 407 gets in. A larger truck often does not, which means either a smaller vehicle and two trips, or a "shuttle" — carrying goods by hand from the truck to the building. Shuttling fifty metres is roughly an extra hour of labour for a 2 BHK.
Buildings without lifts, or with small ones. A lot of South Kolkata is three and four-storey walk-ups from the 1970s and 80s. Where there is a lift it is frequently a 4-person cabin that will not take an almirah or a mattress. Those go down the stairwell, and stairwell carrying is charged per floor for good reason.
Mixed-use ground floors. Shops below flats, particularly along Diamond Harbour Road and around Tollygunge Phari, mean loading has to happen without blocking a shopfront. That often pushes the move to early morning.
None of this makes a South Kolkata move expensive. It makes it specific — and it means a phone quote given without asking about your floor, your lift and your lane is not a real number.
Behala
Behala covers a lot of ground — Thakurpukur, Sakherbazar, Parnasree, Behala Chowrasta, Sarsuna — and the character changes noticeably across it.
What to expect. The main arteries (Diamond Harbour Road, James Long Sarani) are fine for a full-size truck. Step off them and lanes narrow quickly. Sarsuna and parts of Thakurpukur have newer apartment blocks with proper lifts; the older Behala Chowrasta and Sakherbazar areas are largely walk-ups.
Traffic. Diamond Harbour Road is heavily congested between 9 am and 11 am and again from 5 pm. A move that starts at 7 am finishes hours earlier than one that starts at 10.
Typical local shift cost from Behala: a 2 BHK to another South Kolkata address runs ₹6,000 – 9,500. To New Town or Rajarhat, ₹8,500 – 12,500, because you are crossing the city.

Garia
Garia has changed more than the other two in the last fifteen years. Metro extension and the Sonarpur and Narendrapur growth corridor mean a lot of newer construction alongside the older core.
What to expect. Around Garia Bazar and Kamalgazi the older pattern holds — narrow approaches, walk-up buildings. Towards Narendrapur, Sonarpur and along the bypass there are proper apartment complexes with service lifts and, importantly, society rules about move timings.
Society rules matter here. Many of the newer Garia and Sonarpur complexes only permit moves within set hours, require prior written intimation to the association, and ask for a security deposit against lift or common-area damage. Getting this cleared two or three days ahead avoids a truck sitting outside a closed gate.
Student and PG traffic. The Jadavpur and Narendrapur belt means a constant flow of small shifts — a room's worth of goods, ₹1,500 – 3,000. We wrote about this specifically in the student and PG shifting guide.

Tollygunge
Tollygunge — including Netaji Nagar, Ranikuthi, Bansdroni and the Jadavpur fringe — is the densest of the three.
What to expect. Predominantly older low-rise buildings, many without lifts, on genuinely narrow lanes. This is the area where a shuttle is most likely to be needed. It is also where the tram lines and one-way restrictions around Tollygunge Phari and Rashbehari constrain when a truck can be positioned.
Parking is the real constraint. In much of Netaji Nagar and Ranikuthi there is nowhere to legally stop a truck for three hours without arrangement. Early morning — 6 to 8 am — is by far the easiest window, and most experienced South Kolkata crews will suggest it unprompted.
Heritage and old furniture. Tollygunge households tend to have more solid wood furniture — teak almirahs, heavy beds, sometimes pieces that have not been dismantled in forty years. These need proper dismantling rather than being forced through a doorway, and that is labour time worth paying for.

Frequently asked questions
Do you charge extra for buildings without a lift?
Yes, and it is stated on the quote as a per-floor charge rather than buried in the total. Carrying a 3 BHK's contents down four flights is genuinely more work, and pretending otherwise is how quotes get revised on the day. Tell us your floor during the survey and the number you get is the number you pay.
My lane is too narrow for a truck. What happens?
We use a smaller vehicle, or park at the nearest accessible point and shuttle goods by hand. Either is planned in advance and priced in advance. This is routine in Behala and Tollygunge — it is not a problem, it just needs to be known before the day.
How early should I book a South Kolkata move?
A week for a normal weekday move. Three weeks if you are moving during the March-to-June transfer season, at month-end, or on a weekend — those slots fill genuinely fast.
Do you cover Sonarpur, Narendrapur and Bansdroni?
